As opposed to incentivising the importation of old cars which are more harmful to the environment and are more prone to breaking down on our small and narrow streets causing more traffic problems, a new government should decrease registration taxes on new, cleaner vehicles and increase the same taxes for vehicles 10 years and older with the exception of classic cars. We have a lot to learn from UK transport solutions / tax incentives.
Excellent idea. The tax collected from second-hand imports can be used to subsidise electric vehicles and new, less-polluting new vehicles.
Even giving a tax rebate, for example, when scrapping a car for a new cleaner vehicle, people might take that into consideration as well. There should also be - forced removal of junk cars from our roads.
Strangely the cycling organization suggested something like this lowering the circulation tax but suggested putting the higher tax on petrol. This would mean you drive less you pay less. Drive more you pay more.
And as usual the poor or average wage earner gets penalised while the rich can buy as many new cars as they like. It would be a better idea if we raise licences on gas guzzlers and give incentives to people who buy smaller more economic cars. After all you don't need a 30,000 euro 1.8 litre engine car to get from point A to point B. These are just status symbol toys.
